Tools and resources to help you access reproductive health care, stay engaged, and fight for reproductive freedom during this global pandemic
The Missouri State Government is failing all of us. While other states have acted quickly to enact statewide protections, Governor Parson refused for weeks to close schools, and still refuses to enact a statewide shelter-in-place. Missouri does not have statewide paid sick leave protection; 120,000 Missourians and their kids were kick-off of Medicaid recently; and millions of Missourians struggling to make ends meet cannot choose to take a day off of work.
We know that Missourians already facing the most significant barriers to accessing abortion are the ones bearing the brunt of these new challenges, so even while quarantined we cannot give up the fight. To ensure the health and safety of all Missourians, Governor Parson must act immediately to:
- Ensure Access to Abortion.
Recognize abortion as an essential medical service. All pregnancy care is time-sensitive, and that has not changed during this global health crisis. All Missourians deserve the ability and resources necessary to make decisions about if, when, and how to start or grow their family. Ensuring access to abortion during this crisis must be a priority.
- Provide Paid Sick and Family Leave.
Authorize mandatory paid sick and family leave immediately for all workers in Missouri. Economic barriers already faced by low-wage workers in the retail, restaurant, and hospitality industry — disproportionately people of color and immigrants — are being exacerbated. No one should have to choose between their health and putting food on the table.
- Expand Medicaid to Enable Healthcare for More than 200,000.
Expand MOHealthNet immediately as the fastest long-term structural path to providing health coverage for Missourians. Especially as so many are losing their jobs, this expansion should not include work requirements. Acting quickly could provide critical needed funds to our hospitals.
Nothing is more important than the health and safety of our communities, including their sexual and reproductive health. During these frightening and uncertain times, Missourians need to be certain this urgent, necessary healthcare is accessible when they need it. The NARAL Pro-Choice Missouri COVID-19 Emergency Response Agenda is a declaration of critical steps Governor Parson must take to protect and defend the health, safety, and fundamental freedoms of our communities.
As the world grapples with the global pandemic from COVID-19, NARAL Pro-Choice Missouri is carefully monitoring the situation and committed to continuing the fight for reproductive freedom while doing everything we can to ensure the safety of our community. We are so grateful to have you by our side.
