MISSOURI — Missouri Republican state representative and anti-choice extremist Mike Moon has introduced new legislation that would criminalize abortion and require police officers to stop people from accessing abortion care. HB 1799 redefines a fertilized egg as a person with constitutional rights, and would task law enforcement with investigating and interrogating people  who seek abortion care or experience a miscarriage, in addition to outlawing some forms of contraception.

Since Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation to the U.S. Supreme Court cemented an anti-choice majority on the most powerful bench in the nation, anti-choice lawmakers have been falling over themselves to introduce new, increasingly hostile laws designed to criminalize abortion, punish people who choose abortion, and achieve their ultimate goal of overturning Roe v. Wade. This bill in Missouri is the latest example of the anti-choice movement’s increasingly draconian agenda of forced pregnancy and forced birth.

NARAL Pro-Choice Missouri Executive Director, Mallory Schwarz released the following statement on the legislation introduced in Missouri:

The so-called ‘Right to Due Process Act’ introduced by state Rep. Mike Moon is a distraction. It’s a part of a broader strategy employed by the anti-choice movement to push extreme legislation that will rile up their base and distract from other bills designed to push their ultimate agenda of overturning Roe v. Wade.

But Missourians see right through Rep. Moon’s reckless attempt to intimidate and criminalize people who seek abortion care. The pro-choice majority will hold Rep. Moon and his anti-choice ideologues accountable for undermining our most fundamental freedom to make personal decisions about pregnancy. Already, Missouri Republicans and public officials have abused their positions of power to make abortion completely inaccessible for the 78% of Missouri women who live in counties with no abortion clinic. Make no mistake —the people of Missouri are on guard to oppose this latest attack on our fundamental freedoms.”
